This year for the holiday catalog, we shifted to a more high end, photography based, minimal design. Our target demographic in the numismatic (coin collecting) industry is white, middle aged to older males.

An interesting part of the printing process that hadn’t come up before this catalog, was a mismatch of printing with different types of black ink. The background image was a CMYK file I placed in InDesign, and the bottom black box, I used the registration black in InDesign, thinking it would cover enough of a rich black basis. The two files clashed against each other during the printing process and we ended up with a black line across this spread that should have been caught during the test print. It was a learning experience and I have since reached out directly to our printer when I haven’t been sure of how to format specific spreads to ensure the best printing solution.

Timeline

From start to finish, this project was completed in 10 weeks. Each year since I’ve started, we have been able start earlier and have more time. This included all design, all layout, all edits and revisions. I am the graphic designer and merchandise photographer so every item in the catalog that came since I was hired, was photographed by me.

After the printed piece is completed I ensure each item in the catalog is on our website. I also manage the merchandise on the website and am responsible for ensuring the photos, content, tax codes and back-end details are correct for every item.

I export the printed piece into a digital friendly version and link the catalog to the corresponding web pages. This digital version is uploaded into a flipbook type of website and embedded into the Cable Shopping Network website.

I took each of the starter set items and wrapped them in wrapping paper that matched the color scheme and overall look I was using in the catalog, and then also took them out of their packaging to get individual shots of each sets stack of coins. This way the customer can actually see what they are getting with each item and the goal was to communicate the value.
